Garden Design

Consultation Meeting

At this initial meeting we will discuss your design brief and budget. This is an exchange of information – a two way process- and enables me to get to know you and your hopes for your dream garden. During the meeting I will explore how you would like to use your garden and if there is a particular style you wish to create. It is an ideal time to show me any pictures you may have of planting or gardens that you particularly like, and would like me to consider for the design. Don’t worry if you have not got anything though as I will bring along plenty of images to inspire you!
Before the meeting it is worth spending some time thinking about the practical features you may want to include in your garden and how you want to use the space. Do you want to use it for kids or pets? Do you want to use it for entertaining or relaxing? Do you love gardening or do you need a low maintenance solution? At the consultation meeting I will run through a comprehensive questionnaire to ensure I totally understand your requirements.

You will have the opportunity to see examples from my portfolio and will explain the design process to you so that you have a full understanding of each of each of the stages involved. Walking around your garden will enable me to evaluate it from a design perspective, taking into account the potential and limitations of the site, giving consideration to the views, aspect, levels, soil structure and access. Following the consultation the next step is to develop a brief for the design based on our discussions and forward this along with a quotation for the design services required.

Site Survey

It will be necessary to produce a scale plan of your garden prior to developing a design. The survey and site analysis includes:- Measuring the site including buildings, windows, ground levels and access points and features or planting that you wish to keep. Assessing the setting, soil type, drainage, aspect, views (either to be enhanced or obscured) Photographing and sketching the site. If the site is complex the services of a professional surveyor will be required. The cost of this will depend on the size and the complexity of the site.

Concept Plan

I will arrange to meet with you again to present your concept plan alongside a mood board, which will give a taste of the style and ideas for planting. The concept plan will show the key shapes underpinning the foundation of the design and the basic function within the design. Alterations and developments can be made at this stage if necessary prior to the development of the master plan.

Master Plan

Once the concept has been developed to an agreed scheme I will prepare a detailed master plan. This is a hand drawn scale drawing of the proposed layout for your garden, detailing areas of hard landscaping, planting and features. The drawing will also detail material specifications. This drawing can be used to obtain quotations for the construction of your garden.

Construction

The quality of workmanship is key when translating the design into reality. I can recommend professional landscaping contractors for the construction of your garden. However if you already have a contractor in mind I am happy to work with them.

Planting Design

Planting is a very important element in my designs, the planting will create a balance between the soft and the hard elements within the garden and will bring the garden to life. I will ensure the planting is imaginative and attractive to wildlife choosing plants to compliment the hard landscaping and provide sensory beauty. I will see to it that the plants selected suit the particular growing conditions of the garden.

It can be likened to painting with plants and the plant choices will reflect the overall style and personality of the garden. The planting plan will show the position of each plant, its species and cultivar name as well as the quantity required. I will also show you images/mood board of the plants and how they relate to one another. I can source the plants for you from reputable growers. Once the plants arrive on site I can set them out and arrange the planting for you.

Maintenance

It is important that you maintain the new plants in your garden correctly. Often I find my clients do not have the knowledge or expertise to do this and they can find it a daunting task. If required I can offer ongoing support in relation to maintaining your garden and can arrange for you to receive monthly task list of what you should be doing when by plant to ensure your garden looks its best.
